Wind power benefits more than the environment. This clean, renewable source of energy offers a wealth of economic benefits to Hawaii while maintaining Oahu's commitment to nature's preservation.
- UPC Kahuku Wind Power will hire locally whenever possible, providing construction, operations, and maintenance jobs.
- A good rule of thumb is that wind power becomes economically viable at $30 per barrel. To put this in perspective, current imported oil costs are over $90 per barrel.
- Each megawatt of wind energy produced means one less coming from expensive imported fuels. In addition, locally generated wind power is there when we need it, and not subject to supply disruptions from volatile regions of the world.
- UPC Kahuku Wind Power anticipates that it will sell its energy to HECO at a fixed cost (only increased by the CPI). This means that the energy from this project will not increase with the price of fossil fuels. This ultimately helps to stabilize electricity prices and provides a hedge against future price increases of fossil fuels.
